The final day of Black Legacy Week ended with Members of the Success Center and students alike gathering in the E quad, where the atmosphere quickly became lively on Wednesday, May 13.
The event, titled Victory Lap, intended to celebrate the hard work of first-generation black graduates. It also encouraged students to honor the significance of LBCC’s first Black Legacy Week.
BSSC Organizer and Coordinator Angela Fowlkes emphasized the importance of community and belonging on campus.
“It’s very important for students to have a sense of belonging. Black Legacy Week was intended to make sure black scholars knew there was an outlet, a place where they can come and be themselves, judgment-free,” Fowlkes said.
Graduates and attendees alike took advantage of the activities. Card games, Connect Four, and football were among the many things to participate in. The event offered something for everyone, regardless of their interests.
Burgers and various snacks were provided free of charge. People were able to enjoy a free meal and the company of their fellow scholars.
Attendee Darriella Lewis participated in multiple days of LBCC’s first Black Legacy Week.
“This week has been helpful in helping me understand more about me. Every day I’ve come, I’ve felt welcomed and seen,” Lewis said.
Four days of events, activities, acknowledgment, and encouragement culminated. Graduates walked with the confidence they didn’t have before Black Legacy Week.
Music and laughter only contributed to the welcoming atmosphere. Students could be seen dancing, laughing, and having heartfelt conversations.
Upcoming graduate Bryon Crafton expressed his appreciation for Black Legacy Week and the Success Center.
“Things like this give me the confidence to continue with the journey. Now I know I can do my thing, and it’s either move with me or get run over,” Crafton said.
As the event ended, it became clear that Black Legacy Week built a sense of community that LBCC’s black students needed and approved. The Success Center hopes to see this week return in the future.
