LBCC officially eliminated from state championship contention in 24-3 loss vs Golden West

0

Quarterback Will Madonna’s two interceptions and three fumbles proved costly with the Vikings suffering a 24-3 loss to Golden West.

The only time LBCC led the game was when kicker Ethan Smithlin kicked a 25-yard field goal midway through the first quarter to give the Vikings an early 3-0 lead.

Unfortunately for LBCC, those were their only points of the game as Golden West’s defense was stifling.

LBCC’s offensive line wasn’t helping to solve the turnover crisis as Madonna was sacked four times during the game.

Madonna had a rough game all around, only completing 16-32 passes for 99 yards.

“I thought Will looked a little confused here and there and a couple of the turnovers were rough,”  LBCC head coach Brett Peabody stated about Madonna’s performance.

On the bright side, LBCC’s defense held Golden West to their second lowest point total of the year.

A stand-out moment from LBCC’s defense that had a great chance to get them back in the swing of things was when defensive back Isaiah Del Toro intercepted Golden West quarterback Braden Siri midway through the fourth quarter.

“The interception felt good, but we were down so we knew we needed a lot more to do,” Del Toro stated.

That interception unfortunately led to Golden West getting revenge as defensive back Noel Vallejo picked off Madonna just two plays after Del Toro’s interception.

The interception by Vallejo ultimately led to Golden West putting a dagger in this game.

Golden West’s drive started off with backup quarterback Luther Richesson running for a 24-yard gain.

That run was capped off by a two-yard touchdown run by offensive lineman Josiah Laban, who slotted in as a fullback on this play to give Golden West a 24-3 with 50 seconds left to go in the game.

The Vikings’ loss results in officially eliminating them from state championship contention.

With this loss, LBCC’s main focus now is to qualify for a bowl game.

“We’ve got the number three team in the state coming into our house next week. It’s gonna be a massive challenge, Mt. SAC is very very good and then we end on the season on the road at Citrus, who right now is five and two. We’ve got a lot of work to do to even make it to a bowl game,” Peabody said.

LBCC’s next game will be against Mt. SAC on Nov. 4, as this is a must-win game to help their chances to secure a bowl game.

Before the start of the game, LBCC’s current players were seen gathering around dancing to the music playing, warming up and enjoying each other’s company.

“Hopefully we win, I hate to lose. I’m looking forward to the W. I know this game is for fun, but my competitive nature is in high gear,” said alumni Chayma Hlanadis who played for LBCC during last year’s team and has since transferred to Whittier College where she continues playing water polo.

Within the first two minutes of the first quarter LBCC played a game of teamwork helping assist freshman attacker Olivia Slavens with the goal.

Alumni player, Hlanadis followed up with a goal of her own, tying up the score in the first quarter.

Leading into the second quarter, the alumni team scored again within the first 52 seconds.

The LBCC team then kicks things into overdrive. Slavens, with the help from her teammates scored three goals within the span of three minutes.

With the alumni down 4-2 at halftime, there was hope that they could come back.

The current Vikings team scored an additional three goals from Kaylee Vanasopha, Katie Juarez all in the third quarter.

In the final quarter, the alumni answered back inching themselves closer to LBCC’s lead with two goals. However it was not close enough as LBCC’s current team was up by five.

With a final score of LBCC 9 and the alumni 4, both sides were all smiles and cheering each other on in unisync.

“I just wanted to see if I could still play. I didn’t play a lot, but what I did play was fun,” alumni player Julia Smith who played with the school in 2009.

After the game, women’s water polo coach Chris Oeding talked  about the tradition of the alumni vs LBCC game each year.

“It’s all about shared experiences. Both teams get to connect the old and the new,” Odeing said.

“It’s been 20 years since they earned that championship, so today was a great way to honor that team and their accomplishments.”

The freaks come out at night normally, but everyone there at Long Beach City College Liberal Arts campus was every type of ghost, goblin and cartoon character you can think of was in attendance.

Festivities started roughly at 11:30 am with multiple stations of food and beverages tents scattered throughout the E Quad.

Underneath the tents placed at the center of the quad there were tables and chairs to get away from the heat.

Outside on the grass nearing the quad there were theme park basketball games, giant size connect four as well as a DJ spinning some of yesterdays and today’s popular hits.

At center stage there was a 360 degree camera for those in attendance to take their picture in their costume.

Faculty and students alike participated in a costume contest.

The top three student costumes were the Porta Potty, Chainsaw Handman and what seemed to be student favorite Baby Shrek.

Each department of the faculty was supposed to wear a costume from which they chose a specific theme.

“Our department decided on a Rainbow Brite theme and each of us were assigned a color, hence the green dinosaur(dressed as a green dinosaur),” said Student Equity faculty member, Eric Becerra.

“In comparison to Halloween parties we’ve held in the past. Last year’s party was on a smaller scale than this years.”

Students who chose to participate in the costume contest lined up one by one behind the center stage.

“I’m a 90’s baby and I grew up watching WWF, ” said LBCC Media Producer, Brad Crihfield , dressed as the late wrestling superstar Macho Man Randy Savage

“I didn’t attend last year, but I am having a good time seeing everyone else’s costumes, ” said sophomore AJ Langley who was dressed as Count Dracula and participated in the student costume contest.

Overall the spirit of Halloween was  alive on campus.  Everyone from Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, Maleficent, Super Mario, the Carebears, Frankenstein’s Bride, Nemo, Sexy Shrek and many more costumes that deserve an honorable mention.

Way to keep the “spirits” alive on all Hallow’s Eve.

Pacific Coast Campus Hosts Spooktacular Halloween Carnival

0

Long Beach City College’s Pacific Coast Campus came alive with some spooky festivities on October 27th as the college hosted a modest Halloween Carnival.

Drawing a small crowd of community members, LBCC students, and staff the event offered many seasonal thrills such as spooky games, a movie screening of Casper the Friendly Ghost, and candy to be passed out and community camaraderie.

Several different clubs at LBCC held a booth open for the participants to enjoy. The booths had simple carnival games, candy and small prizes.

A few clubs that were in attendance included the French Club, the International Student Club, LAC’s The Order of Tong-one of LBCC’s longest running social club as well as Tong’s Little Sister and more.

At the booth hosted by the International Student Club, participants could take pictures with a white and black striped backdrop, hold a mugshot placard, and play a ball pong game.

“We’re here to bring games and fun for the kids and students who are here tonight” Nathalia Miyamura, the President of the International Student Club stated.

Other club members voiced their excitement to be outside representing their club and providing games and fun for their friends and just to be enjoying the company of friends from school as well as the other club members and attendees.

At the French Club booth participants could choose between a spin the wheel and get a prize game, or a corn hole game.

“A lot of our members have kids too,” club member Monica Munoz said. Which is why the club started to participate in the Halloween Carnival.

Another member of the French Club, Kelly Coleman came to the carnival representing the club dressed as the historical french icon Marie Antoinette and came to show her support.

The Long Beach City women’s volleyball team came out strong and dominated Los Angeles City College winning all three sets of the game.

The first period started off with the outsider hitter, Jordyn Hollins, coming through with the powerful strikes, making it difficult for the opponent team to strike back.

Women’s volleyball dominates in overtime to secure 3-2 win vs Mt. SAC

0

LBCC women’s volleyball scores the win against Mt. SAC 3-2 where two highly ranked teams put it all on the line and gave it everything they had.

This hard-fought victory helped LBCC gain a sole position as the number two team in the conference, with only Rio Hondo standing in their way.

“We had a lot of stuff going on off of the court, so being there for each other helped us have a lot of energy on the court and back each other up,” LBCC setter Enaya Vaielua on what emotions and mindset No. 16 Long Beach City College women’s volleyball secured the 3-2 victory over No. 14  rival Mt. San Antonio.

Vaielua gave this game everything she had as she accomplished a 15-kill, 15-assist, and 16-dig triple-double.

LBCC was outworked and picked apart by Mt. SAC in the first set, losing 25-13.

LBCC showed a lack of communication early on, but as the second set arrived, the communication was where it needed to be.

The Vikings blocked a few of Mt. SAC’s kill attempts which helped give them the lead. Middle blocker Mikayla Curry’s block in the middle of the set made the score 13-21.

Mt. SAC ended up playing spoiler as they came back as the set went on, taking a 23-22 lead as the set was nearing a close.

After a timeout, LBCC head coach Tyler Jackson gave a pep talk that aided LBCC to take over and win the set 27-25. An incredible block by middle blocker Ryannah Gagau capped off the set.

LBCC started hot once again as the third set got underway, securing a 13-9 lead spearheaded by a couple of hard-hit aces by defensive specialist Carmelina Infante.

LBCC still kept control as they held a 17-13 lead, but just like the last set, they couldn’t maintain a firm grasp on the lead.

Mt. SAC scored seven straight points to make it 20-17 in their favor and then took a 24-21 lead, needing one more point to secure the set victory.

LBCC came back and scored three straight points to tie it up at 24 and ended up completing the comeback and securing the set victory as Ryannah Gagau came in the clutch once again with a kill followed by a Mt. SAC mishap to give the Vikings a 28-26 set win.

“Once the sets started going by, I started to get a feel for it. The adrenaline through my body was rushing, so I knew I had to step up and do my job,” Gagau said.

Mt. SAC dominated the fourth set the entire way to send the game into the fifth set.

The fifth set was all in the hands of LBCC, securing a 15-10 win and a 3-2 match win as they swept their rival in the season series.

“For the second round of the conference, we’ve been starting pretty slow in a bunch of our matches. We started slow in the first set and then we were able to climb up in the second and third set. It’s been kind of something that they’ve been doing consistently when we’re starting slow and then we’re able to fight back. So I always have confidence in my team that we’re able to come up with the win at the end,” head coach Tyler Jackson stated after the game.

LBCC looks to keep their three game winning streak going with a total of five games left in conference before heading into regionals.

Pueyo’s 5-goal, 6-assist game leads to LBCC’s 26-15 win vs El Camino

0

The Vikings hot start poured into the rest of the game leading to the 26-15 victory against El Camino.

LBCC fired away early as they scored in the first 24 seconds of the game.

El Camino came right back and scored, but it was a game of catch-up that they had to play for the rest of the game.

LBCC had El Camino’s number the whole game, especially in the first period of play, as LBCC’s Sandro Pueyo accounted for four out of the five goals en route to a 9-2 score as the period came to an end.

Pueyo had a monster day all around, scoring five goals and accumulating six assists to help his team win.

“We need to work harder, more on defense than offense I think, but we need to work harder as a team to win something this year,” Pueyo said.

Pueyo analysis was spot on as LBCC gave up a season-high 15 points in the matchup.

El Camino woke up in the second period by scoring five, but even with the improved scoring, LBCC put up another eight points to widen the gap as the second period went on.

El Camino ended up outscoring LBCC in the third period with six goals to LBCC’s three, but LBCC still held a big lead with the score being 20-12 as the period came to an end.

LBCC outscored El Camino 6-3 with those six goals being scored consecutively before the game ended.

LBCC secured the win with a final score of 26-15.

This was an above-average game regarding points on the board, as LBCC set a new season-high in points scored.

Although the points scored for LBCC were impressive, coaches and players alike agreed that the defense could use major work and improvements, as head coach Djoko Radunovic emphasized as he spoke about his thoughts on the game.

“We wanted to press up and secure the defense first and then push the counter-attack from there. We didn’t do a very good job of pressing the ball so they were able to get more shots than what we wanted to allow,” Radunovic said.

LBCC looks to improve their defense, but keep scoring at a high rate as they finish out the year with five games remaining on the schedule.
