{"id":12592,"date":"2023-10-19T21:43:19","date_gmt":"2023-10-20T04:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lbccviking.com\/?p=12592"},"modified":"2023-10-19T21:43:20","modified_gmt":"2023-10-20T04:43:20","slug":"latinx-poets-encourage-others-to-write-more-poetry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbccviking.com\/?p=12592","title":{"rendered":"Latinx poets encourage others to write more poetry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Latinx Poetry Night was held for students to come together to enjoy guest performances and highlight poetry at LAC on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event gave people the chance to listen to three poets and hear poems from recently published author Donato Martinez\u2019s book, \u201cTouch the sky.\u201d Attendees were also allowed to ask questions if they had any at the end of the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students are encouraged to go to events like these on campus, whether they enjoy poetry or not, to hear the encouraging words from the powerful poets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe big thing is feeling seen, heard and loved and their identity being validated,\u201d director of student equity Eric Becerra said. \u201cRelating to these events that are happening on campus, and bringing all of what they are from many different aspects because that&#8217;s what makes them special, those are their strengths.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The consensus from the poets there was that poetry can be done by anyone, it&#8217;s known to be another sense of therapy, reflection and vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think when people read poetry, there&#8217;s this solid message in these poems that are saying something to you and it&#8217;s another way of expression, very therapeutic, but also shows a sense of vulnerability that we don&#8217;t see in other kinds of art,\u201d says author Donato Martinez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can be a way to express someone&#8217;s culture, trauma, and identity to either go through some things in their own comfortability or just telling your story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think that with poems it doesn&#8217;t have to have a structure, you should just write about your feelings and what you want to do because it&#8217;s about you to release about what you&#8217;re feeling, which you don&#8217;t have to necessarily perform it to anybody\u201d said poet David Alvarado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poetry can be helpful in things and can turn into something more creative and encouraging for the writer according to these poets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI say write, especially when there&#8217;s a lot of pressure on you, whether it&#8217;s in school or outside of school, it&#8217;s just a way to get your feelings out and there&#8217;s no right or wrong,\u201d said poet and Cal State LA alumni Cecilia Sanchez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"12595\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/lbccviking.com\/?attachment_id=12595\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lbccviking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IMG_8323-scaled.jpg?fit=2560%2C1707&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"2560,1707\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;5&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;Canon EOS Rebel T6i&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1697134569&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;50&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;6400&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.005&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"IMG_8323\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Cecilia Sanchez reads a poem at Latinx poetry night.
