Long Beach Hangar serves students and locals

The Long Beach Hangar is a family friendly food court with plenty of indoor and outdoor space where students and locals can hang out and socialize while grabbing a bite to eat.

Decorated to look like an old airplane hangar, the modern food hall is home to 14 small vendors specializing in unique and artisanal food.

From tacos to coffee, The Hangar has something for everybody to enjoy, especially a college student looking for a place to go in between classes or even to help them pay their school fees.

“A majority of my staff are LBCC students,” said Tony Nguyen manager of gourmet grilled cheese restaurant the Plaid Sheep.

The Plaid Sheep offers a variety of gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, as well as optional sides including french fries or tomato soup.

With the average meal ranging between $10- $14, it may not be entirely practical for LBCC students to enjoy a bite to eat at the retro-styled food court.

With upscale prices, one would hope that the quality and quantity of the food would be reflective of the cost.

During select times, the Plaid Sheep also offers percent off promotions for students or local workers.

“I would say we’re one of the cheaper places inside of The Hangar,” said Nguyen.

One of the most popular items at Nguyen’s restaurant is the classic american grilled cheese, which starts at $5.

Film student Ruby Davis shares her thoughts on how convenient she thinks The Hangar is despite their prices.

“I think it’s a really neat idea to have a bunch of different restaurants all in one place for people to choose from. The quality of the food is really good, but I think the prices could be lower,” said Davis.

Davis visits The Hangar at least once a month to enjoy tacos from Amory Tacos and describes the food from the mexican restaurant as “nothing short of mouth watering”.

LBCC student Elisabeth Holder explains her issues with the lack of quality at The Hangar.

“The food at The Hangar varies too much in quality. If you want to have high prices on your products, you need to have products worth the price hike,” said Holder.

Holder said that the day to day variance in food quality is what made her stop eating at The Hangar.

While she did not mind the cost, Holder believes that you should get what you pay for and The Hangar does not always deliver on that.

Former LBCC nursing student Elijah Ramirez praises The Hangar on choosing an ideal atmosphere for their business.

“The location is perfect, it’s by the mall, the airport, LBCC and Boeing. It’s a good medium for people from Long Beach to Lakewood,” Ramirez said.

While the artisan eateries are the main focus of The Hangar, the location is also part of LBX, or Long Beach Exchange, a relatively new outdoor mall centered around art, food, and fashion, with many unique stops to check out.
