Along with receiving free ice cream from officers from the Long Beach Police Department, students and staff had the opportunity to socialize with officers at LBCC.

The Long Beach Police Department Campus Division Hosted its Ice Cream Social at Liberal Arts Campus E quad on Thursday.

The event was organized by Lt. Omar Martinez from the Campus Division to demonstrate what they do in their duties and present them with opportunities to interact with the officers of the law.

“It’s an opportunity for the Police Department to interact with the college community with the faculty staff and students in an environment that is friendly and fun so they can ask questions about what police officers do during their typical shift and for what officers do in Long Beach City College,” Martinez said.

Students also could interact with one of their dogs from their K9 unit and explored the different types of equipment used from the Security Services division and the Public Safety Dive Team.

Officer T. D. Do is one of the members of the Security Services division who demonstrated the equipment they use when on duty from the port, park, and airport.

“It feels really good to make sure the staff and the students feel safe and in order for us to help the student and staff is to be engaging with the student and staff that’s why we’re doing this,” Do said.

LBCC Superintendent President Regan Romali stopped by the event and shared her positive expressions about the event.

“I love seeing so many students out here interacting with the Long Beach Police Department. And get a chance to know that the police are here to protect them and serve them and be friends with them but it also gives them a chance to explore different careers in law enforcement.” Romali said.

Students participated in a pushup challenge and were able to claim prizes from a prize wheel.

English Student Amanda Abramovitz who attended the event learned a lot from the officers of what they do while interacting with one of the dogs from the K9 unit.

“I learned that police are less intimidating than they look like they are, they are actually really nice and I like they’re giving free stuff because I like free stuff,” Abramovitz said.

The Long Beach Police Department Campus Division also hosted an Ice Cream Social at the Pacific coast Campus a couple of weeks before they hosted one on the Liberal Arts Campus.
