Long Beach City College forward Hannah Marshall’s two assists guided the Vikings to their South Coast Conference Championship victory, winning 2-0 against Mt. San Antonio College.
The Vikings women’s soccer team secured an early lead in the sixth minute where a cross from Marshall found forward Kianna Moore who put the ball in the back of the net.
“We practice that play all the time. Passing it back to the sixth (6 yard box) and I count on my teammates to be there,” Marshall said.
The score was doubled in the 37th minute where Marshall again provided a pass for midfielder Sydney Trump to score.
LBCC relied on a high press, causing Mt. SAC to make costly mistakes and counter attack with direct passes to the Vikings’ pacey forwards.
The Vikings were destined to chalk up some points on the board in this game as they racked up 20 shot attempts, with seven being on target along with two corner kicks.
The offensive intensity was matched by the defense as they kept a clean statsheet throughout the entire game.
Goalkeeper Veronica Salcido helped that clean sheet with a four-save performance with two coming after the 80th minute in one-on-one situations.
“The defense was on it. It was intense. Get (the ball) out of here was the only thing on my mind,” said Salcido.
The Vikings ended the regular season with a record of 14-0-5 remaining undefeated and headed into the Regional Playoffs.
“We have had so many close games against high level teams. Feels like we’re putting it all together at the right time. Keep it going in the right direction. Now let’s see if we can keep it up in the playoffs,” head coach Eduardo Nunes said after the game in regards to his team’s conference championship victory.
The first game of the Regional Playoffs is on Nov. 15 against an opponent that is to be determined.
