Fashion Club promotes sustainability at Earth Day pop-up and raises funds for upcoming fashion show

By Cain Carbajal

Set up in front of the LAC bakery, a tent blasting music and surrounded by vintage clothes, swimsuits and hand-made bandanas set out on tables caught the attention of students on their way to class.

The funds raised by this sale will be used to fund the fashion department’s upcoming fashion show alongside other events. This fashion show will be the first to be hosted in 6 years.

The fashion show will be on May 25, at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30. Admission is $20 at the door, but presale tickets are $15. The location is yet to be announced.

All the clothing sold at this Earth Day celebration popup was secondhand, with club members personally selecting items from either their own clothing or from thrift stores.

The sale had a variety of options for those in attendance, including enamel pins, tote bags printed with student-made designs, and even dog bandanas for your furry friend.

Alana Francisco, a member of the fashion club who only joined this semester, volunteered her time to help run the Earth Day popup.

“Earth Day is just a day that makes people want to give back to the earth,“ Francisco said.

On top of selling only second-hand or hand-made clothing, each purchase came with a zine that was written and printed by an alumni of the fashion club.

The booth was set up by members of the college’s Fashion Club, which provides fashion students at LBCC an additional opportunity to meet other fashion students on campus and come together for events such as this popup.

Ernestina Zavala, a member of the Fashion Club and the budget manager for the upcoming fashion show was among those helping set up the tent and process transactions.

“(The Fashion Club) is mainly about community, the fashion industry is very particular and I think this group are all aware of that and we’re trying to create a community within the community,” Zavala said.

Besides sales, the fashion club also organizes craft and workshop events that are open to any students interested, not just fashion students. One upcoming workshop will be covering the basics of macrame.

This macrame workshop is set to be on May 9, 1:30-3:30 p.m. in room F-117. Supplies for the workshop are included in the $10 price of admission.
