LBCC held a sip n’ paint for Filipino heritage month, only one student showed up

By Mari Kebede

Only one student attended the Filipino sip and paint event.

“The only reason why I heard about it was because my counselor approached me and told me there was going to be free food and painting, so I just thought ‘why not’?” said Edrick Salgado, an LBCC student.

There’s been a pattern of low attendance of students coming to events like the sip and paint, assuming that it is the lack of promotion.

“I just think a lot of students simply don’t know about it, if they did they’d probably be interested,” said Salgado.

Filipino food was offered with Filipino music playing for the attendee to enjoy and have the experience of the culture while painting.

The event holder Bri Pinketon, thinks the mass emails these events are advertised by are ignored by students.

“We like to keep it intimate to gain that closeness with others, so we were able to get grant money through different foundations, after putting in some thought the staff and I came up with the sip and paint,” Bri Pinkerton, the event holder said.

Pinkerton believes information about these events is usually sent through an email to all students at Long Beach City College, but are ignored.

“We spread the news through our communication email but students probably receive but not really look into it. The director, Eric Becerra and I are talking about how to go about this in a better way, because these events are for the students,” said Pinketon.

Pinkerton believes ever since the pandemic, the campus is trying to help students get back to the norm by gathering them together through different fun activities.

“The purpose of these events is to help and encourage students to get on their groove back on campus, especially after the pandemic, it just gives them a chance to connect with other from either outside the classroom or the office” said Pinketon

Pinkerton encouraged students to go to more on-campus events.
