Baseball falls 11-1 to Compton in tough loss

By: Alison Doherty

Long Beach City College baseball is hopeful for the remainder of the season despite their 11-1 fall to the Compton College Tartars on April 18.

In the second showdown of their three-game series, first baseman Ryan Geck scored their only run on an RBI by right fielder Davis Grawey in the second inning.

Geck leaves this game with a season total of 37 runs and 40 RBIs.

“We’ve had a rough couple of weeks, but we know we are a good team, and we have to find what we were doing earlier in the season to get back on track for the playoffs,” Geck said.

In a difficult third inning, Compton had six hits and four runs, leaving the score 4-1, and the Vikings were unable to recover.

“A lot of people were doing individual things today,” sophomore AJ Quezada said about what the team was lacking.

As they approach the playoffs, the team is ready to recover and dominate their upcoming games.

With a total of 31 at bats, the Vikings were still unable to compete with Compton leaving with a single run game.

“We felt flat, it felt like no one was ready to play today and we weren’t executing things like running our bases correctly, playing catch, or hitting the ball the way the game calls for.” Quezada said.

Compton continued to dominate, scoring a run on a wild pitch by Vikings sophomore Luis Guzman.

The Tartars were able to put three more defeating finals runs on the board by the ninth inning.

Reminiscing on the season, Geck shared his favorite memory so far, “Beating the OEC schools was really cool, last year we got destroyed by all of the Orange Empire Schools and this year we put up a better fight and beat most of them.”

Despite this loss, the Vikings have an overall record of 25-11 and a conference record of 14-6 as they advance to their remaining games before playoffs.
