A Sip N Paint featuring free snacks, beverages, and painting supplies for participating students was hosted by the Social Work Club of Long Beach City College on Monday at noon at the Trades, Technology, and Community Learning campus room FF101.
With finals approaching, the club decided to allow students to relax and clear their minds as the toll of a semester’s stress reaches a climax.
Club president Jeremy Collins Hasshaw was pleased and hopeful that the Sip N Paint had the desired effect on students.
“I feel like it’s really good because it helps with your mental health and finals can be stressful at times, especially when you’re dealing with multiple classes,” Hasshaw said.
Hasshaw helped guide the students in painting a calm beach sunset, though students were free to paint whatever they wanted, while refreshments like water, juices, teas, and sodas were available.

Vice president Down Luna feels that a Sip N Paint grabs the attention of students and brings necessary reprieve during a stressful period.
“It was to help support mental health, especially during finals right now, and to bring resources to classmates. A lot of times you say we’re going to host a resource fair and students aren’t interested. You tell them we’re doing a free Sip N Paint and now they’re intrigued,” Luna said.
Providing a sense of community and informing students of the resources available was the main goal of the club.
“We have so many amazing things on this campus and students don’t know about it. So, how do we bridge the gap? If you tell them we’re doing this event, people aren’t really interested because they already have a million things going on. So whenever we try bringing fun things to do, we’re still exposing them to new information,” Luna said.

Eddie Rosillo, an LBCC social work major, attended the Sip N Paint due to word of mouth and a desire to try something new.
“I just thought it was something to get out of my comfort zone, you know, to be around people,” Rosillo said.
Social work as a major is a people-focused field that appeals to those with compassion and a desire to help others and this Sip N Paint event is a great example of the club’s work to improve the mental well-being of LBCC students.
