Viking men’s soccer defeats Compton College 6-1

By Jonathan Lopez

Long Beach City College men’s soccer earned a dominant 6-1 victory over Compton College, showcasing strong teamwork, offensive pressure and second-half momentum on Oct. 20.

The Vikings capitalized on scoring opportunities and relied on contributions from players across the field to secure the win.

After the match, Chayse Owens, Henderson Figueroa and Jeremiah Omishakin reflected on the team’s performance, the challenges Compton presented and the importance of staying focused and working together.

Owens credited teamwork and strong performances from his teammates during the match against Compton.

Owens said the turning point came when the midfielders put him in a good position to score the first goal of the match.

“Me playing well and our whole team playing well gave us confidence for future games” Owens said.

Owens identified Compton’s Jordan Lopez Perez as a major challenge.

“Their number 10 [Perez] was really good, so we had to keep a close eye on him,” Owens said.

He also credited the substitutes for helping his team gain momentum in the second half.

Owens said the substitutions made a difference by bringing on the intensity and keeping the game high.

Figueroa said the second half was the turning point in his team’s match against Compton.

“Once we got the second goal, we got rhythm, and we just kept scoring,” Figueroa said.

He was pleased with his individual performance, especially earning an assist on a goal scored by defender Alexis Jarquin.

Figueroa acknowledged that keeping a clean sheet was a challenge.

“Not being able to keep a clean sheet is always tough, but we move how we can,” Figueroa said.

He credited his team’s second-half success to staying mentally sharp and finishing their scoring opportunities.

Omishakin said his team gained confidence and momentum during its match against Compton after scoring a goal.

“Once we got the goal, we started playing with more confidence,” Omishakin said.

He was happy with his performance and how he supported his teammates.

“I was happy with how I played and how I helped the team,” Omishakin said.

Omishakin said Compton’s defense was a challenge because they played tough defense and the team had to work together to find open space.

Omishakin credited his team’s second-half performance to staying focused and taking advantage of scoring opportunities.

“We kept pushing, stayed focused, and took advantage of our chances,” Omishakin said.

As the team looks to build on their dominant early-season performance, all eyes now turn to their next challenge on the pitch. The Vikings will put their winning momentum to the test when they face off against Pasadena on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 1:30 PM.
